Brunei Boosts Warnings and Non-smoking Areas

Date : 12 March 2012

Brunei’s Government has announced it will increase the size of health warnings on cigarette packages so that they cover 75 percent of the package area instead of 50 percent. It will also expand the country’s non-smoking areas.

The new warnings will come into effect on 1 September 2012, while prohibition on smoking in certain areas was scheduled to be enforced from 1 March 2011.

The Minister of Health said that new non-smoking areas would include sidewalks near business premises and a six-meter radius from any building where smoking is banned, as well as public staircases, hospitals, medical clinics, factories, workshops, financial institutions, bus and taxi stops, stadiums, gymnasiums, restaurants, markets, cinemas and many others.

Brunei joins Canada and Australia in having picture warnings covering 75 percent of tobacco packages.
