First Meeting of National Focal Points (NFPs) for the OIC Water Vision

The First Meeting of National Focal Points (NFPs) for the OIC Water Vision took place on 3-5 June 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey. The meeting was attended by the National Focal Points from OIC Member States, OIC Institutions, and Observers. SESRIC was presented in the meeting by Senior Researcher Mr. Mazhar Hussain and Researcher Mr. Fadi Farasin. SESRIC updated the attendees on its water related activities along four dimensions reflecting the core areas of its mandate i.e. statistics, data dissemination, research, and training.

More specifically SESRIC gave an overview of the following activities that it has undertaken:

  • Establishing a comprehensive online database on OIC water statistics that includes 18 indicators and covers all 57 OIC countries
  • Establishing a web portal on water resources to facilitate matching of needs of Member States with offers in terms of training, capacity building, exchange of experience, expertise and technical assistance.
  • Starting research activities in order to prepare a comprehensive report on OIC water status to be submitted to the 3rd Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water scheduled to be held on 2-3 November 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey
  • Developing the Water Resources Management Capacity Building Programme (Water-CaB) with the aim of enhancing capacities of human resources in Member States by facilitating exchange of knowledge, experience and best practices in the domain of water and thus contributing to the implementation of the OIC Water Vision.

The OIC-GS made a presentation in the meeting on the status of the implementation of decisions of the Second Islamic Conference of Ministers responsible for Water held in Istanbul on 2012. The OIC-GS highlighted the main objectives of the OIC Water Vision and areas of possible cooperation in the field of water. In addition, Member States reported their respective activities towards the implementation of the Vision. Finally, the attendees of the meeting agreed to develop and formulate an implementation plan for the OIC water vision and decided to further discuss the proposals of establishing a water council and a water fund.
