Agriculture plays an important role in OIC economies in terms of employment, production, and therefore development. The OIC Member States, as a group, are well-endowed with potential agricultural resources and account for a significant share of global agricultural production. However, while some countries benefit from the new technological improvements and mechanical capabilities in agriculture, other countries experience extreme hunger and poverty and still face problems of efficiency in the agricultural sector due to the lack of useful and efficient agricultural techniques. Against this backdrop, SESRIC initiated the Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB) in 2011 in order to contribute to the efforts of the OIC Member States in achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security.
The Programme is expected to enhance the capacities of the relevant national institutions in the OIC Member States in a wide range of areas such as efficient techniques of land, water and livestock management, fisheries and aquaculture and food security. In addition, it serves as a platform where best practices and experiences can be shared and exchanged.
