Workshop on Improving the State of Elderly in OIC Member States
Date: 24-25 April 2018
Venue: Jeddah - Saudi Arabia

The OIC General Secretariat, in cooperation with SESRIC, organized a Workshop on “Improving the State of Elderly in OIC Member States” on 24-25 April 2018 at the OIC General Secretariat Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The workshop was attended by experts from the Member States as well as relevant OIC institutions and international organizations and aimed to effectively identify common trends on population ageing and inquire key challenges faced by elderly people in OIC Member States in a more systematic and coordinated way.

Given the increasing share of elderly people in OIC Member States and emerging challenges faced by these people in their socio-economic life, it has become critically important for OIC Member States to start exerting more efforts with a view to improving the well-being of elderly people.

During the Workshop two documents prepared by SESRIC were elaborated by the participants, namely “State of Elderly in OIC Member Countries” and “Recommendations for Possible Actions to Improve the State of Elderly”.

The agenda included discussions on various issues regarding the elderly in OIC countries, such as the current state of the elderly; perspectives of international and regional organisations in addressing challenges faced by elderly; national practices and perspectives on addressing challenges faced by the elderly; recommendations for possible actions to improve the state of elderly and deliberations on a possible OIC Plan of Action on the elderly.

The Workshop served as a platform to exchange and share knowledge, experiences, best practices and models for improving the well-being of elderly, and addressing their common challenges in OIC Member States. During the Workshop, Member States also had a chance to share their specific views and observations on the “Recommendations for Possible Actions to Improve the State of Elderly”.
