Palestine Announced the Preliminary Results of the Population, Housing and Establishments Census 2017

Under the auspices of H.E. President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud ABBAS, Announcement Conference of the Preliminary Results of the Population, Housing and Establishments Census 2017 was held on 28 March 2018 at Muqata’a, the Presidential Headquarters in Ramallah, State of Palestine.

The conference was honoured by H.E. Dr. Rami HAMDALLAH, Prime Minister of State of Palestine as well. On the margins of the Announcement Conference, H.E. the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud ABBAS awarded H.E. Ms. Ola Awad, President of Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), with the Gold Order of Merit and Excellence.

The 2017 Population, Housing and Establishment Census, which is a national project that benefited support from all ministries, private, civil society organizations and media, was implemented by a technical team from (PCBS) with funding from national and international organizations.

Thanking the funding institutions, H.E. Ms. Ola AWAD expressed its gratitude to all of the Palestinian people who contributed to the success of the Census through overcoming tremendous obstacles.

Based on the preliminary results of the latest population statistics, a total of 4,780,978 people live in Palestine by the end of 2017. From the total population, 2,881,687 Palestinians live in the West Bank while 1,899,291 live in Gaza. 435,480 Palestinians live in occupied East Jerusalem. The report also provides the results on population growth and density, unemployment rate, illiteracy, housing and establishments among others.

PCBS recorded a population growth of 30% in the national census conducted for the period between 1997-2007, but this growth dropped to 27% in the 2007-2017 period. Population grew from 2,895,683 in 1997, to 3,767,549 in 2007 and then 4,780,978 in 2017. With regards to population density, Gaza Strip has 5,203 Persons per square kilometer which is the third most densely populated region with population above 1,000,000 after Singapore and Hong Kong while West Bank has 509 Persons per square kilometer. Furthermore, the unemployment rate was recorded as 27.2% in total, including 24.4% among males and 40.1% among females. Unemployment in the West Bank reached 13.2% while it reached 48.2% in the Gaza Strip.

The conference was attended by high level delegation from the governmental institutions and diplomatic missions of countries who have general consulates in Palestine as well as international organizations such as United Nations and European Union. H.E. Amb. Musa KULAKLIKAYA, Director General, and Mr. Abdulhamit ÖZTÜRK, Research Assistant at Statistics and Information Department represented the Centre thereat.
