Brainstorming Session on Developing a Mediators Guideline ‘Code of Conduct’ Focusing on Culturally Sensitive Mediation Approaches
Date: 13 September 2019
Venue: SESRIC HQ, Ankara - Türkiye

SESRIC, in collaboration with the OIC General Secretariat, hosted the “Brainstorming Session on Developing a Mediators Guideline ‘Code of Conduct’ Focusing on Culturally Sensitive Mediation Approaches” on 13 September 2019 at its Headquarters in Ankara, Republic of Turkey.

In line with the OIC mission of achieving peace and harmony, the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), with its Resolution No. 53/45-POL and its update 56/46-POL entitled “Strengthening the Mediation Capacity of the OIC”, mandated the OIC General Secretariat to prepare a Code of Conduct for mediators, “including culturally sensitive mediation approaches.” The task at hand and the limitation of the available sources on the topic necessitated holding a “Brainstorming Session on Developing a Mediators Guideline Focusing on Culturally Sensitive Mediation Approaches” to fill the gap in the literature by benefiting from the knowledge and expertise of a wide circle of participants.

The session brought together participants from the OIC Contact Group of Friends of Mediation, relevant OIC institutions, international organisations, scholars and international experts. The Brainstorming Session utilised the experience and expertise of the participants on the topic of culturally sensitive mediation to develop further the concept and to gain insights on the subject of culturally sensitive mediation approaches.

The output of the Brainstorming session will guide the team working on developing the Mediators Guideline. The final draft of the Guideline will be prepared by the OIC General Secretariat and SESRIC and will be circulated to the Member States for their consideration and comments before submitting it to the upcoming 47th CFM for adoption under the resolution on Strengthening the Mediation Capacity of the OIC.
