Background:

Similar to many countries within the OIC region, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is faced with the challenge of addressing work accidents and occupational diseases and strives to overcome their human and socio-economic consequences. In this regard, the National Occupational Health Office (Office National de la Médecine du Travail - ONMT) of Mauritania requested technical support from SESRIC through OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET) in order to develop its OSH legislation, receive technical trainings for its employees including on-the-job trainings and simulations, and to renew its laboratories in accordance with international standards.

Main Objective:

The project aims to tackle the challenges of occupational accidents and diseases by joining efforts and complementary advantages of the partnering institutions to improve occupational safety and health conditions in Mauritania.

The Directorate General of Occupational Safety and Health (DGOSH) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of the Republic of Türkiye.

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

Expected Outcomes:

Within the framework of the project, it is expected to achieve the following results:

  • Increasing the number of well-trained and well-equipped technical staff in order to provide better occupational hygiene measurements in order to ensure healthier and safer workplaces in Mauritania.

  • Improving the OSH legislation structure in Mauritania, and

  • Upgrading the hygiene laboratories of ONMT to international standards
