The 4th Open-ended Intergovernmental Experts Group Meeting (IEGM) to discuss the draft ‘OIC Jeddah Convention on the Rights of the Child in Islam’

SESRIC participated in the Fourth Experts Group Meeting (IEGM) to discuss the draft "OIC Jeddah Convention on the Rights of the Child in Islam", organized by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) and the OIC General Secretariat at its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 5–7 November 2024.

The event brought together key representatives and experts from OIC Countries and relevant OIC institutions involved in the protection and advancement of the rights of the children.

The meeting commenced with opening statements of H.E. Amb. Iya TIDJANI, Representative of the Republic of Cameroon, as the chair of the 50th OIC Council of Foreign Ministers; Director General of the OIC Cultural, Social and Family Affairs Department Dr. Amina Obaid AL HIJRI; and Prof. Noura bint Zaid AL-RASHOUD, Executive Director of IPHRC.

The meeting aimed to present and discuss the outcomes of the 3rd IEGM, which took place on 29-30 October 2023 and to further review the draft Convention with the aim of finalizing it in the next meeting. Mr. Muzamil EDEMA, a researcher at the Economic and Social Research Department, represented SESRIC at the meeting.

Experts from OIC countries conducted an article-by-article review of the dt Convention and proposed amendments. The meeting ended by concluding the review of the general observations, preamble and the first Three Articles of the proposed Covenant. Additionally, the meeting brought forward useful proposals for improving the legal, linguistic and normative content of the text.
