Workshop on ’Extending Social Security Coverage to Informal Workers’

Within the framework of the Social Security Institutions Capacity Building Programme (SSI-CaB), SESRIC organised a Workshop on “Extending Social Security Coverage to Informal Workers” on 15-16 April 2025 through an online video conferencing platform.

The Workshop brought together distinguished experts from the Social Security Institution (SGK) of Türkiye, State Social Protection Fund (SSPF) of Azerbaijan, Social Security Corporation (SSC) of Jordan, and Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) of Malaysia.

The activity was attended by 65 participants from social security institutions, Ministries, and other relevant organisations across 22 OIC countries.

The Workshop explored various pathways and strategies for extending social security coverage to informal workers. It aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of the mechanisms for extending social security coverage to informal sector workers, while providing an opportunity to explore a selection of best practices in OIC countries.

The two-day activity covered the following key topics:

  • Informal employment and its implications
  • Challenges and opportunities in extending social security coverage to informal workers
  • Formulating strategies for expanding social security coverage
  • Uncovering various aspects of extending coverage
  • Best practices in formalizing employment
