SESRIC, jointly with the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), and in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), organised a Regional Workshop on “Measuring Natural Resources in the National Accounts” on 1–4 September 2026 in Chiba, Japan.
The four-day workshop brought together 17 officials from 11 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, including 9 officials from 6 OIC Member Countries: Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. Participants were mainly from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs), as well as Central Banks and line ministries working on national accounts, natural resource statistics, and environmental-economic accounting. The programme provided participants with technical knowledge on compiling natural resource accounts in both physical and monetary terms, including valuation methods for natural resource assets and approaches to measuring depletion.
The workshop started with the opening remarks of SIAP, SESRIC and OECD as well as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan. The technical sessions covered the relationship between the System of National Accounts (SNA) and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) frameworks, data requirements, institutional coordination mechanisms, data governance, dissemination practices, and the role of NSOs in the compilation of natural resource accounts. Participants benefited from the presentations, practical exercises, country experience-sharing sessions, and technical discussions on the application of international statistical standards. Two panel discussions were also held, focusing on the implementation and dissemination of natural resource accounts with the contribution of selected countries, and these sessions were moderated by SESRIC.
The workshop strengthened the technical capacities of the participants in compiling natural resource statistics in line with the SNA and the SEEA. It particularly focused on recent methodological developments reflected in the 2025 SNA, including the treatment of natural resource depletion, asset classification, renewable energy resources, and the integration of natural resource accounting concepts into national accounts.
Moreover, the workshop contributed to improving the availability, quality, and policy relevance of natural resource statistics, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making on economic development, environmental sustainability, green growth, and the monitoring of national policies and international development commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
