3rd Meeting of the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET)

The Third Meeting of the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET) was organised by SESRIC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of the Republic of Turkey (MoLSS), in Istanbul, Turkey, on 10 May 2016, on the sideline of the Eighth International Conference on Occupational Safety and Health which was held on 8-11 May 2016.

The meeting took place with the participation of the heads of OSH Authorities as well as senior experts of occupational health and safety institutions from twenty OIC Member Countries respectively from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Benin, Brunei, Jordan, Malaysia, Mauratania, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Senegal, Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda and Yemen.

The main objective of the Third Meeting of the OIC-OSHNET was to review the progress of the actions and activities accomplished since the inception of the Network in Ankara on May 2011 and discussed the modalities of closer collaboration among OSH authorities in the OIC Member Countries. One of the major part of the Meeting was to revise and adopt “Istanbul Recommendation on Sustainable OSH Services in OIC Member Countries”, towards accomplishing Sustainable Development Goals of 2030 Agenda.

At the opening session, Mr. Kasım Özer, the Director General of the DGOHS, expressed the satisfaction from hosting the event. At the opening remarks, the Director General of the SESRIC, Ambassador Musa Kulaklıkaya mentioned that the OIC OSHNET was willing to develop relevant standards in accordance with the General Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health and make those standards available for the use of relevant bodies in OIC Member Countries pursuant to the decision of the Third ICLM. Those standards would mainly be used with regard to projects financed by relevant OIC institutions within the scope of OSH; progressively the standards would be popularised among the OIC Member Countries. Ambassador Kulaklikaya also stated that the problem of workplace safety and health in the world and the strategies for its reduction should be considered with a new vision at both the individual country and international cooperation levels. In this spirit, the gathering in that conference was to deliberate and exchange views and expertise on one important aspect of cooperation in the field of workplace safety and health.

The participants expressed their satisfaction for the implemented activities and the meeting and adopted a number of recommendations regarding the enhancement of cooperation on OSH among the OIC Member Countries.
