SESRIC actively engaged in the influential “International Conference on Women in Islam: Status and Empowerment”, organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This significant event took place on 6-8 November 2023, in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The conference’s primary objective was to foster equality and empowerment among women in Muslim communities, striving to make significant progress in advocating for women’s rights within the framework of Islam.

As an esteemed guest speaker, H.E. Zehra Zümrüt SELÇUK addressed the conference with great distinction. Her valuable contribution was focused on the 4th working session, which specifically examined the role of Muslim women in contemporary societies. Titled “The Role of Women in Economy and Public Life in OIC Member Countries: Major Opportunities and Challenges Facing Muslim Women in Contemporary Societies from a Statistical Point of View”, H.E. SELÇUK’s presentation aimed to shed light on the opportunities and challenges encountered by Muslim women in various aspects of public life and the economic landscape.

Prior to commencing her presentation, H.E. SELÇUK firmly stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people who have endured the horrific Israeli aggression and brutal attacks in Gaza, all of which are fragrant violations of international norms, laws, and the most basic principles of humanity. It is appalling to witness the tragic loss of lives, with a significant majority of victims being women, children, and even infants under the age of one. The western world is not talking about fundamental human rights, protection of civilians including women and children when the issue is about Palestine.

In response, several OIC countries have escalated their efforts to demand an immediate ceasefire, striving to halt further civilian casualties and ensure humanitarian access and civilian protection. H.E. SELÇUK urges OIC countries to amplify the voices of Palestine, ensuring that their plea for justice reverberates worldwide amid this ongoing genocide. At this pivotal moment, solidarity among OIC countries is crucial, as it is more imperative to stand together more than ever.
