“Women-Friendly Cities United Nations Joint Programme” (UNJP) was initiated in 2006 with the aim of mainstreaming gender equality in planning and programming processes of local administrations. The Women Friendly Cities UNJP aimed at empowering local administrations and women’s organizations for establishing strong collaboration among them. After the completion of the 1st phase in 2010, the 2nd phase of the United Nations Women Friendly Cities Joint Programme was initiated in April 2011 and finalized in 10-11 June 2015 with an international conference held in Ankara. Mrs. Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk and Dr. Cem Tintin represented the Centre thereat.

Women Friendly Cities United Nations Joint Programme has been implemented in 12 provinces of Turkey with the partnership of Ministry of Interior (MOI), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the financial contribution of the SIDA (Sweden International Development Cooperation Agency).

Project was first launched in İzmir, Kars, Nevşehir, Şanlıurfa and Trabzon provinces in the first phase and then expanded to also cover Adıyaman, Antalya, Bursa, Gaziantep, Malatya, Mardin and Samsun provinces of Turkey.

During the conference, topics including “Woman and Urbanization”, “Gender Mainstreaming at Local Level” and “Community Engagement for Gender Equality” were discussed and best practices on women friendly cities from Austria, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Turkey, were presented. In addition, 38 projects, who had received grant support within the scope of Women Friendly Cities United Nations Joint Programme, were also shared with the participants.
